{October 17, 2008}   ~untitled~ Chapter 5

“It is said,
The Phoenix came to us as a savior,
and a guide.
So she saved the world, the gods had thus destroyed.
So shall she also guide us,
prepare us for the next phase of this world.”

–Prophecy from Seer of Aginese

Mara paced the room again, waiting for Dri to join her.  She sighed, tired of the politics of being a princess, more tired of living this life.  The raven haired young women had decided some time ago, that her aunt Alina was better suited for being queen, then she was.  She knew how to act, and how to make others think she was nothing but a snobby little princess. In truth, her father had worked hard to make sure she knew just want was going on in the world.  Just how bad some places in their kingdom were.  And, how to try and make things better.

She turned as the door opened, frowning at the tall elf who entered.  “Your late.”  She told him, watching as he bowed, yet also made a face.

“Could not be helped.  I was asked to talk with some people, as well as check up on our friends.  Last I heard they were on their way here.  They succeded in picking up the theif, and will join us shortly.”

“Don’t be so sure it’ll be easy.  There are people out there that want this to not happen.  We’re trying to change the world after all, and were not the first.”  She moved to her desk, pulling out a book.  “Five other groups have tried.  Thirty people, never seen or heard from again.  Thirty people, and the world has yet to change.”

Dri managed not to roll his eyes, but only just barely.  “Nothing says why they never came back.  For all we know, there could be a very good reason behind it.  Heck, they could have changed the world and we just didn’t see it.”

Mara stared at him for a second, before shaking her head.  “I can’t believe you think that.  Let me make this clear Dri.  If they make this journey, you and I will go with them.  I am not suited for being the queen.  I never was.  Why do you think my father made the law the way it was.  So that I wouldn’t just be pushed into something, I’m not meant to do.”

“I don’t understand why your still so sure he was willing to let the kingdom leave your hands.  He also made it so that, should you choose, the line would stay with HIS heirs.”

She closed her eyes, having argued with him over this several times before already.  She was tired of it, tired of hearing him say the same thing over and over again.. And never understand that she knew her father wishes better then he did.  “You were not his confidant.  You ever were.  He trusted my future with you as my helper, but never as my leader.  I am my own woman..”  Reaching into her desk drawer she pulled out another book.  “Take this, and read it.  Share it with someone, at your own risk.  It’s a copy of the one my father gave me, to give to you in case you became this… Difficult.”

The tall elf took the book, frowning at it.  On the cover, it only said ‘Lines’, for Dri.  “I’ll give it a….”

“You’ll read it before you speak to me again.”  She interrupted.  “I won’t allow you entrance, unless you can answer a question, randomly from that book.  No other way will get you back in here, with out obeying a direct order from your ‘princess’.”  She threatened, seeing that he knew she would not lie about this.

“Alright.   I’ll read it.  It won’t change my view point on anything.  I know I’m right.” He said, bowing and turning to leave, knowing she had in fact, yet again, dismissed him.

Once he was gone, Mara groaned and sank into a chaise lounge.  The elf tired her out, and she still didn’t understand why both her father and the witch had been so adamant that he be with her at all times.  It made little to know sense.  She didn’t see how he fit in the prophecies.  But then, she didn’t understand how she did either.

Picking up the book, she opened to the next to last page:

Mara, understand that little makes since, before it’s happened.  That is the nature of prophecy.  If we could understand it to far in advance, then we would change things.  If it was easy to understand, everyone would, both the side of good, trying to bring about the time the Phoenix promised us, as well as those working to destroy her.

I pray to her that you will be safe.  I was blessed before I died, in seeing a possible future.  If what I see comes to pass, you’ll never know how proud I am of you.  All that I ask, is that you do all you can to stay honest and true, following the way of our goddess and following you heart.  In all things, look not at status but at the heart and soul.

I love you my daughter.  I could never have asked for someone more perfect then you.

With All my Love,

King Torean.

Closing the book, tears falling down her cheeks, Mara pulled her knees to her chest and wished that he’d not died.  The castle felt full of people who pretended to be a friend, but in truth only wanted to be close to a ‘Princess, in line for the throne.’

After a few moment of the allowed weakness, the dark haired young women stood and wiped the tears away, before putting the book away.  She was to meet with the men she’d hired to supply her and the other for the trip, so she knew what was needed to take on something like this.  Checking to make sure her cheeks were free from the tear stains, she looked at her self and took stock.

Shorter then most women, but not short.  Well built, not to thin.  Black hair that ran down her back, to her waist.  A few streaks of pure white, flowed well with her soft, ivory skin.

She’d been called beautiful, stunning and other things.  She’d seen women that were more beautiful then her, and turned away from the image in the mirror, not wanting to see the sadness that her eyes held, at the loss that still held her heart in check of many things.

The princess left the rooms, moving down the hall towards the center of the castle.  Putting on a face of the cold, indifferent princess that most people knew.  The mask, she longed to leave behind.

{October 16, 2008}   ~untitled~ Chapter 4

From the days of old, when the God’s ruled.
There arose five mages.
from the four directions, they stood.
And with them, the holder of the Sacred Jewel.
They foresaw the God’s war, and hid the stone.
It is foretold that someday
heroes will come,
find the Jewel,
awaken the five mages
and usher in a new era.”

–Translation from the scroll of Ete
Prophecy for a New Era

Kylie dreaded what she had to do next.  The council would not be happy, and it could further the gap between them.

“What is it Priestess Kyile?”  Elder FaaOqua asked her.  “What could be so Eld important, that you feel the need to wake me up at this Goddess awful time.  And why did you insist on meeting with me in private.”

“I have news from the Seer.”  she told him.  “It is most unwelcome, and I did not want the travelers to hear of it, until it was approved.  However, waiting until it is approved is not an option.  They must reach Aphrell in seven weeks.  As we both know it only takes five weeks to get there, but I suspect they will run in to trouble on the way.  Kai and the man are getting the horses around.”

“So let them leave.  Look, Kylie, I greatly respect you, the Phoenix Order, and Kai’s father, but they have brought nothing but trouble to our city.   I do not understand why you feel the need to wake me, just to tell me they have to leave.”

“Because of a story we all seem to have forgotten.  Do you remember who Mamtana was?”

“Yes, yes.  It was she who wielded the Moon Maidens swords.”

“Correct.  Now, do you remember her parting words to us, all those years ago?”

The elder thought for a moment, his face blanching as she spoke the words in question.  “Promise me this.  Guard my swords well.  Make them the most sought after treasure in Aurora.  Many will attempt to steal them.  One, who is not of us, shall almost succeed.  She is to have them, for they will listen to her soul.”

“You can’t mean that Dryad?  She could have meant anyone.”

“I would agree with you, but our Seer saw them leave.  She told me of her vision only thirty eltins ago.  Now do you understand my problem?  If we ask for them, they will be trapped here for sometime, something which can not happen.  I could demand you give it to her, but that would only further breach the chasm between the council and the order.”

“Then how do you except them to take it with them?”

Kylie smiled for the first time since waking her old friend.  “It is best if you don’t know.”

—-

“You want us to what?”  Kai asked Kylie, after she had returned to them.

“Steal the swords.  Look, C’Tanam has to have them for this journey.  The problem is, the council isn’t going to just hand them over to a Dryad thief.  Instead they’ll simply keep you here, while they talk about it.  You four need to figure out to to get them, and do it tonight.”  she stressed the last part.

“Tonight?” C’Tanam asked, her eyes wide, “I planned my first attempt for weeks.  You expect me to take a bunch of amateurs in, with no planning?”

The priestess’ eyes flashed, “I expect you to use what the Phoenix has given you.  Look at these three.  What have they got to offer?  Again, figure it out.  You must be gone from here by dawn, if not sooner.”  that said, she left the four standing before the shrine of the Moon Maiden.

C’Tanam swore under her breath, “Use what the Phoenix has given you.  Figure it out.”  she mimicked the women, “How the tripiea am I gonna get past the guards, past three locks, dozens of magical wards, and into inner sanctum.”

Kai grinned, “You ask for help from your fellow companions.  One who has snuck into places he’s not supposed to, another good at quick plans, and a third who can use magic to help where she can.”

“Fine, how do we handle the guards?”  the redhead asked

“Put them to sleep.”  Lina answered, “It’s a simple spell.  I can also help with most of the wards, either dispelling them, or at least negating them till were out, which would be˛ safer in the long run.”

Kyp shrugged, “As for the locks, the two of us can handle them.”  he smiled at the tall elf, “I’m just not sure what were gonna do with you?”

The big man laughed, “I will stay out here, and keep watch.  If needed, I can distract anyone from finding out what’s going on.”  he looked at the thief, “Sound good to you?”

The small Dryad nodded, slightly shocked at the speed in which they prepared to help her.  “Sounds like a plan.  Let’s make this quick.  I want to be out in less then an hour.  When we go in, walk where I walk, and stay close.  Lina, put the guards to sleep now, and we’ll go in.  Kyp, take the horses to the east side of the building, and wait for us there, we can leave through that gate.  Let’s go.”

She headed off, the others following her instructions.  As they neared the building, the three slowed, walking cautiously towards the main doors.

Kyp frowned, “Are they out Li?”  he asked softly.

She nodded, “There minds are asleep.  They will only remember that the night seemed to drag on.”

C’Taman smiled, and opened the main doors, and the three quickly slipped inside.

The room they’d stepped into was oddly shaped.  On the right, fifteen feet away, was a wall.  It looked like any other wall, straight with a door on one end.  To there left was another wall.  This one angled from the corner of the room, near where they stood, out towards the door across the hall from them.

“Through there is another hall like this one.  There are four rooms in it; one in the left corner, where they store the chairs.    On the right are two more rooms, one holds dish wear, and the other is a small kitchen.”  C’Tanam explained, as they slowly moved across the room.  “It’s the forth room we want.  It’s the shrine for the Moon Maidens Swords, and boy is that an oddly shaped room.  One wall juts out five feet, on the left.   It then slants back about two feet, where we find the door.  Then another wall juts out, five feet again, and slants back to the main wall, a little over ten feet away.”

Lina’s brow furrowed, “Why the strange design?”  she asked.

Surprisingly it was Kyp who answered, “According to the priests, the walls were built around not only her body, but also the blood she spilt.”

“You know this, but not about the hierarchy of the Phoenix Priesthood?”  C’Tanam asked, bending down to pick the lock at the second door.

He shrugged, “I once had to get close to a historian, and she loved telling me all about certain tales after…” he stopped suddenly as Lina bent over to watch the small red head work the lock.

“After what?”  The human girl asked, standing again, innocent eyes on him.

Kyp wasn’t sure how to answer.  The one sure thing he’d learned during there twenty-six days of travel and waiting for the council, was that while she knew and understood quite a lot, she was also completely clueless about certain things like; sex, kissing, how to she looked, the feelings she could easily evoke in a man, and pretty much anything dealing with most relations between men and women.

He was stilling thinking, when C’Tanam opened the door, exclaiming softly, and the question was forgotten.

They stepped through the door and looked across to the strangely shaped room.

“Oplel.”  Lina said, “No wonder you got caught leaving.  This is a pretty good spell.  Must have taken several people, just to cast it.”

“Can you help us with it?”  C’Tanam questioned

The girl walked closer, biting her lip as she looked, what the others saw as empty air.  “It’ll take some time, but…”  she stopped and frowned, “Think I can give us about five eltins in the room.”

“Only five?  It takes that long just to pick the lock, let alone get in and undo the lock on the case, and get the swords out.”

“Sorry Ana, but I can only get you five eltins.  It’s a very complex spell, that triggers when you enter.  With out at least five other Phoenix mages, or several hours, the best I can give you is five eltins.  I can tell you that this is the only spell in this entire building.”

“Great, so then we might as well leave.”  the small Dryad said

Kyp grabbed her arm, “Or, I could kick down the door, grab the whole case, and we get out of here. We can take care of the case later.”  he turned to Lina, “can you cast the spell, so no one will hear be breaking the door?”

She smiled at him, “I can do even better, I can make it look like the doors still fine, and that the swords are still there.  The illusions will last a few days.  We might be able to leave with out the army breathing down our necks.”

He grinned at her, “Sounds like a plan.  How long should it take for you to give us the five eltins?”

Lina thought about it for a moment, “Ten eltins, maybe less.  Before I release the spell, I’ll let you know.  Move quick.”  She took Kyp and moved him to a few feet before the door, “This is as close as I can get you know. Five eltins Kyp.  Move fast.”

The assassin nodded, and prepared to move when the girl said.  It wasn’t much time, but he was more then sure he could do what was needed.  The young thief had stepped out of the way to allow them to work, and watched the young priestess close her eyes, and start the spell.  She’d always been amazed to watch them work.  There were times she swore she could see the threads of magic being weaned.

Muttering to herself, Lina worked carefully to place the spell just right.  If even one thread or word was off, they would be caught in moments.  Her hands started move about, making shapes in the air.  The small Dryad thought it looked like she was weaving the air.

Suddenly, the girls eyes flew open, and she froze her body.  “Now Kyp.” she said, releasing the spell.  That was all it took, and the assassin rushed at the door, smashing through it, picked up a large glass and wooden case, before rushing back out to where the other two were.  It had been less then two eltins, and Lina’s hands dropped, sweat visible on her forehead.  As the three looked back at what should have been a mess, they instead saw that nothing had changed.

“Wow.”  Kyp said, looking back at Lina.  “So, how long will this illusion last?”

The young women grinned at him, “Until the other spell is removed.  I was able to tie the two together.  As long as Oplel lasts, so will it.”

“Oh sure… I spend weeks working on how to get in and steal these things, only to be caught.  You two spend only a few minuet’s planning, send out some little spells, and pouf. All done.”  C’Tanam shook her head, and walked away muttering to her self.

“She doesn’t sound happy with us.”  Lina said, as they also left.

“She’ll get over it.  Dryad’s are an excitable race.  They tend to over act.  Plus, we did kinda upstage her.  I mean, like she said, weeks of planning and we just do it.  You’d be a little bugged too.”  He nodded over to the horses. “We need to get going, long trip ahead of us.”

Lina nodded, and headed over to the others, smiling up at Kai.  “Let’s get going.  We have time before they know the swords are gone, but still.  Better to be not here, so they don’t suspect anything of happening.”

Her brother smiled down at her, and gave her a quick hug.  “Then lets get a move on.  Dra is awaiting us, and we can’t let the princess worry for us.”

With that, the four would be hero’s took off, leaving the small city to slowly awaken, and go about there lives, not knowing their greatest treasure was stolen.  It would be several years before they did, but that’s another story.

{October 11, 2008}   ~untitled~ Chapter 3

“Small tho she is, she will steal that which can not be stolen, and give her soul for Aurora.
He who once saw the world through pure eyes, will journey for power, but will find his last heart.
So shall the Star gather them to her, A Thief.
A Guardian and a Guard.
A Bringer of War, and a Bringer of Death.”

–Translation from the stone of the Antiquity
Prophecy for the Age of Rain

A small redhead paced in her small cell. Something was up. Guests had arrived yesterday, and the guards had been sneering at her ever since. Obviously it wasn’t another city, trying to claim that she was the thief they’d been trying to catch. That usually made the guards grin at her. Like they wanted her to realize that she might have to leave, and go somewhere worse.

“What could be worse then being stuck in jail.” she said to herself.

“You could be dead? Or forced to be a slave for a mayor someplace.” a voice said from behind her.

Turning, she glared at the unwanted guest. “I could handle being dead, and escape being a slave.” she looked the women up and down. “Who are you?”

“Names Lina. I’m here to offer you a way out of here C’Tanam.”

“Oh yeah, what’s the catch.”

“Princess Mara wants you to help her on a quest. After the task is complete, your free to go.”

“What’s to stop me from escaping once I’m out of here?”

Lina smiled, “A simple spell. Once cast you will be unable to go more then a hundred yards with out fainting. Both of you. And much past that, you’ll both be dead. Which you’ve already said doesn’t bother you.”

“You gonna be on this leash with me?”

“Yes. Is that going to be a problem?”

“What’s to stop me from just killing you, then leaving?” the small Dryad asked

“The same spell will kill you, if I die. Of course, it will kill me if you die.”

“So, your willing to risk your life for this princess?”

“No.”

“Then for what?”

“I’m willing to risk my life over the future. A chance to be apart of something big.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who cares. Why should I risk my life for a world that scorns me, huh? Tell me that pretty?”

Lina’s eyes gleamed, “To prove them wrong. To show them all that you, Xtanam can really be somebody. That your past, and your parents, aren’t you. Before you ask, yes I know about your family. I know who and what they were.” she looked the other in the eyes, “I also know what they thought you’d become. Wouldn’t you like to do one good thing in your life? I’m not asking you to stop being a thief.” Lina shrugged, “Tripiea, it’s why we want your help.”

“You want me because I’m a thief?” C’Tanam asked, skeptically

“That is exactly why we want you. You were able to get in, and almost out, before the guards caught you. To the best of my knowledge, no one’s ever gotten that far before.”

“All right, I’ll help you do this, quest. How knows, it might be fun. Now, lets get that leash thing on.”

—-

Kai paced the floor, frowning down the prison hallway.

“Would you stop pacing. She’ll be fine. Gods, your the one that suggested she talk with the girl in the first place.” Kyp said, stabbing a piece of fruit with his knife.

“It’s been over an hour. Even if she did the spell, it shouldn’t take this long.” was the reply.

The assassin rolled his eyes, “Look, first she had to convince her that we’re on the up-and-up. Then she has to perform some spell, then they most likely got her a change of clothes. You know women garments take longer to put on then men’s. And don’t forget that our little thief is a Dryad. She’s about half the height of the shortest Elf in this city, so finding something that fits could be a problem.” Kyp looked up at him “Are you always this way?”

“Always what way?”

“This antsy and unsure?”

Kai stopped pacing, and frowned, “Never.”

“So, why are you know? What’s making you so nervous? I mean, the only son of Garana, one of the best meceniers ever, yourself one of the best. You’ve taken on whole armies. Tripiea, you’ve taken on me. And lived I might add.”

The tall elf scoffed, “You weren’t that much of a challenge.” he frowned again, “As to the other part, the only difference between now, and my other jobs is that Lina’s here.”

“There’s your answer, your worrying about her. Afraid that something will go wrong, she’ll get hurt, all under your care.” he stood, and faced his friend, “She can take care of herself, with what the three of you taught her, and the power she gets from the Phoenix. I know she’s your sister. That will make it harder, and you’ll probably never really let her go, but your also forgetting that she’s human. She’ll most likey die before you, and hopefully from old age.”

“There you go again. Kyp, the philosopher, scholar, and “

A voice from behind them finished, “And assassin. Good to see you again Viper.”

The two men turned to see a short Dryad, with flaming red hair standing in the door way. Kyp’s eyes widened, “So your our thief. No wonder I didn’t recognize your name. You called yourself Q’Ish’tam Yash, the Kender. On the arm of the very wealthy Oushek.” he smiled at her, “He was robbed several days later, wasn’t he?”

She laughed at him, “Died the same night. Wish I’d known who your target was. I would have robbed him blind two days early, just to see his face when he found out all his little trinkets were gone.” Her smile turned bitter, “Glad he’s dead.”

Kai shook his head, and looked at Kyp, “I remember that. It was a huge scandal. The magistrate didn’t even bother to investigate his death, since everyone knew he was involved in slave labor.” looking back at C’Tanam narrowed his eyes, “Where’s my sister?”

“Back in the cell. After the spell was cast, she was very upset. Kept saying she’d altered it by accident. Said it was working, but that it was wrong. She gave me these clothes, and kicked me out, asking me to wait out here with you. I listened at the door, but it was quiet.”

“She most likely placed a spell over the room, so no one outside could hear what she was saying. It’s one of the first spells they learn, so they can preform there magic, with out others learning the spell. It’s better then mumbling, since you could be misheard, and mess up.”

“We also use it to have private conversations.” a voice said from the doorway leading out. “Sorry to interrupt, I am Kylie, a eighth level priestess. Your sister called out for help several minuets ago. She said a spell was both wrong and right, and asked for guidance.” she looked at C’Tanam, “And she is right. I will need to talk with her. Excuse me.”

“What’s that mean, both wrong and right?” Kyp asked, after she’d left.

“I have no idea.” was Kai reply

—-

Lina jumped as someone knocked at the cell door, “Yes?” she called out.

“Ya Shomac Tothro.” someone said from the other side of the door.

She opened it, and bowed, “Ya Shomac Tothre.”

“I am Kylie, Pfis’Lpos. You asked for help on a leaching spell?” the elfen women said, closing the door.

“Yes. As I’m sure you saw, it appears to be right, but there is a… a… I don’t know what it is, but it’s there. Something’s wrong.”

“Did you feel another presences while performing the spell?” Kylie asked, walking around the Lina.

The other frowned, and thought about the question, “Yes, it did feel as thought there was someone else here. But it always feels like that when I use magic, so I didn’t think anything of it.”

“Interesting. Have you ever told anyone about the ‘other’ presence?”

“Only my father. And all he did was smile knowingly, and tell me to never tell anyone lower then Pfeg’Lpos about it.”

“Is your father a priest?”

Lina smiled, “Oh yes. He is very well respected.”

“Mayhaps I know of him. Tell me his name.”

“Berit Kerensky, Pfux’Lpox.”

Kylie sucked in a breath, “Then you are Lina Kerensky. Newly elevated to Priestess. I have heard of you.” she smiled, “It would seem it is true. I cannot tell you everything, but the spell has been made to change. The Phoenix has seen fit to leash the Dryad to someone else. You are being used now, only because they are not here. You did perform the spell correctly, but this other altered it while you were casting it. You will know who this is, because the leash will seem to become visible, and transfer to another. They will not like it I think. However, it is not your doing.”

“Now then, your brother and friends await.” She placed her hand on the young women’s shoulder. “You have much to do, and far to go, Lina, Pfow’Lpyz.”

As she spoke, a green light surrounded them, and a light green shawl appeared on Lina’s shoulders. She gasped, and fingered the delicate lace.

“But, I’ve only just been elevated?” she questioned.

“Yes, but who knows the mind of our goddess. Even for a human, you were raised quite young. Come, you must leave here today. The time grows closer, and if you do not hurry, the witch will return, before you.”

Lina nodded, and followed her out.

As they entered the waiting area, a tall elf was yelling at Kai.

“I don’t care who she is, or who your father is, you can’t take her.” the elf yelled

“The council has already approved it, there nothing you can do.” Kai respond calmly.

“Look boy, my appeal hasn’t been heard yet, so she’s not going anywhere, but…”

“With them to Aphrell.” Kylie said, “That is where they must go, and thus, so must she.”

“Stay out of the. What does the Phoenix know of state matters. If they try to take leave, then I will kill her.”

“Then you will kill this Priestess as well.”

“What the Una n‘Tripiea are you talking about Kylie? I would never kill a priestess. I may not like you people, but I’m not stupid.”

Kylie shook her head, “There is a spell on the Dryad, and the Human Girl. If you kill one, you kill them both.”

The elf’s eyes narrowed, “Then take the spell off.”

“She can’t.” The priestess smirked, “It was altered by an unnone being, and can’t be removed, except by them.” she glared at the elf, “Now then Eftirem, you will step aside, and let them pass. I have others to disturb tonight, and will not enjoy my task.”

Eftirem grudgingly moved from the door, and they passed with out incident.

Once outside, Kai picked up and hugged his sister, “I see you have a new status, Pfow’Lpyz. Congratulations. Now put it away.”

“What’s a Fow L Piezz?” Kyp asked.

“It’s the first level of priesthood in the Phoenix Order. It means the Phoenix has seen fit to elevate her, and that she has much promise.” C’Tanam answered. “Haven’t you ever studied the Phoenix Order, Viper?”

“Viper?” Lina asked. “Isn’t he an assassin?”

Kai grimaced, “Yes he is. He’s also Kyp.”

Lina’s eyes grew, “Really?” she asked, stepping to said person, “Wow. Mothers talked about you. She says your second only to the Assassin. He died nine years ago, while on a job in Cadithac.”

He smiled, and stepped back from the girl, “He was the best.”

“Mother would flip is she knew I was journeying with his son.”

Kyp stared at her, “His what?”

“His son. Mother said that the only way you could be as good as him, was if you were raised by him. That, and right after he died, the men who killed him ended up dead. And in very ugly ways I understand. It was assumed to be you. But why, if he was only a teacher?” Lina’s eyes grew, “Oh my goddess! That’s why you don’t have last name. It makes since now. He found you, raised you, and trained you.”

Kyp shook his head, “Your mother figured all this out, just because I’m good, and I avenged his death?”

“Well, she really only speculated. She had a few other theories.” the girl smiled again, “But you just confirmed this one.” she said, walking away to catch up with the other priestess. “Kylie, you said we needed to leave now, right?”

The assassin stared after her, “Gods she’s dangerous.” he said.

Kai slapped him on the back, “Hard to believe she’s only eighteen. No wonder the Phoenix elevated her.” he said, before following after them.

“Come on assassin, we don’t want to be left behind.” C’Tanam told him, running to catch up with them.

Kyp slowly followed, wondering how he’d ended up in with these people. Even the thief was going to prove difficult, and she’d only just joined them.

{October 11, 2008}   ~untitled~ Chapter 2

“One shall be a guardian of Fire and the Souls of the World, and killer of he that brought Death.
Another shall Protect the Fire, and steal from the thief, that which is closely guarded.
The bringer of Death shall redeem himself, and save the world from it’s plight.”

Lina shifted again in her saddle, not used to the long hours spent on horse back. They’d left home yesterday, heading towards Hour-Sisi, or Isisi as most called it. Kai hadn’t told her why it was so important that they head there first, or why he seemed upset with Dri. They would reach the small city in a few hours and she hoped to know more then.

“Were making better time then I thought, at the next rise you should be able to see the Tower of Ama-Ra d’Yow. It’s only a few miles outside the city. Since it’ll be evening when we arrive, you can visit it tomorrow. I’m sure the Dryad’s would love to show you.” Kai told her, pointing to the crest of the hill they were now climbing.

“What are Dryads like?” she asked him

“They are hard to explain, but I’ll do my best. When the gods first made the world, Dryads were primarily women. Strong warriors, they were tiny, topping out at just over five feet, if they were lucky. They lived in forest’s, and are close to the trees. History says they used to be connected to there own trees, and as it grew old, withered and died, so did they. That of course meant a longer life span. Of the five races, they are the one of the oldest, second only to the Elves. It’s also believed that around four thousand years ago, the god Eld erOck altered several of them, so they gave birth to males. The few that could were welcome, in spite of the difference. After some time, they felt it would be best to leave, and thus the Kenders were born. Not quite as woodsy as there cousins, they are none the less a feisty race.”

“Back to the Dryads, not long after that, the race evolved slightly, and they left their forest home, to build cities. They were the first to use stone instead of wood. They became singers, dancers, and the such, changing there whole society. No one knows what happened, but many think it was the changes, and the emergence of man that first started the change. Remember, man is still a young race. We elves have been around for over fifteen thousand years, while you have only been here for three thousand.”

“Are they still close to the trees?” she asked him

He frowned, “There is a small order that worships them, but most now worship the Phoenix. You of course know the story of the phoenix.”

“And the Gods warred, causing fire and ice to cover Aurora. In there desire to destroy each other, they destroyed themselves. From there ashes, a form arose. She had wings, and blessed the world. Changing nothing, she returned the lands to there former glory, and asked for nothing in return, but love.” Lina smiled at him, “Sound about right?”

“Sound just like what father told me the first night I met him, when I was five.” He said, thinking back, “That was a long time ago.”

“Must be so interesting to be two hundred and seventy-three years old.” she said, wistfully

“I’m only one hundred and forty one.” he growled at her playfully

“Whatever.” Her eyes caught sight of something, “Is that the Tower?” she asked, leaning forward. “It’s breathtaking.”

Several miles ahead of her was a gleaming navy tower. It was several miles tall, and a mile wide. The color was so dark, it was almost black, and it seemed as though you could see stars gleaming across the surface.

“It’s like looking at the nights sky.” she breathed. “Do you know the story behind it?” she asked

“Never thought to ask. I’ve only been here once before. Dryad’s have little use for mercs. Most of the other races leave them alone. We’ll be staying at the Swaggering Lion. It’s near the west gate.”

“Are you gonna tell me why Dri asked us to come here?”

“He want’s me to call in a favor. I helped someone out a couple years ago, got him get home and such. He’s the best at what he does, and I understand why Dri wants me to ask for his help.”

“Then why are you so upset with Dri?”

Kai glared at the landscape, “I’m upset because, to the best of my knowledge, only three people know what happened. Myself, Kayla, and our friend down there. If Dri knows, then he’s been spying on me, and I don’t like it. d’Illianad is known for having the best spy network in Aurora.”

“And since he’s the guardian for Mara, it’s as his disposal.” Lina finished for him.

“Exactly. On top of that, he used you, to get to me. It’s a common curticy that when asking a favor, you ask yourself. Not another to really the information. It would seem he’s changed. Sounds more like a pollination than a friend.”

“But what if this is really for the best?”

“Doesn’t matter. Trickery and lies is not the way to find the Sacred Jewel. The Phoenix wouldn’t allow it. If anything, she’d hide it from us. If fathers right, and we’re the hero’s of old reborn, then she can just as easily have us reborn again. You’ve read the stories. Two hundred years ago, all the signs were right, and a group set out to find the jewel. We still don’t know what happened to them. If it’s not done right, she’ll just set it all up to happen couple hundred years from now, till we get it done right.” He turned to look to his sister, “I know you know all this, I just don’t want you to die at only eighteen. You may have a shorter life span then me, but that’s too young, no mater what species you are.”

She smiled at him, “Then we’ll just have to keep him in line. Between the two of us, it shouldn’t be to much of a problem.”

He smiled at her, as they passed through the gates, and into the city. He just hoped she was right.

——-

A young women sat brushing her long raven locks. Streaks of white ran through it, making some parts look almost blue.

“So they went to Isisi first. It doesn’t matter. The point is that their both coming.” she told the man standing behind her.

“It does matter. It means were going to have more trouble with them, then I first thought. I specifically told her they were to pick up the thief first, then the assassin. He’s making the trip take longer then it should.”

The women turned to face him, her green eyes flashing. “If what Lina says is true, then he is not one to be ordered around. You did not hear all that the witch told me, though you tried.” her eyes narrowed, “Which brings up another point. Father trusted you. He once said you were a man who trusted his friends, and viewed the world through open eyes. That you did not see race. I wonder now what he would say of you.”

“That I am protecting his daughter from those that try to kill her, and am making sure she is placed on the throne.”

She waved her hand at him, “I see a man who has let a little power go to his head, and now when he looks at someone, see what he can get out of him. You are like a thief, eyeing your next mark.” She stood, and walked away, “You may leave Dri.” she said, dismissing him.

He bowed to her and left, the door closing soundly behind him.

“Eld I am tired of this.” he said to himself, heading to his own room.

—–

Kai gently shook the prone figure before him.

“Come on Lina. Time to get up.” he whispered

The women moaned, and rolled over, “What?” she grumbled

“Ahh, the genteel fragile Lina, emerges from her bed of roses, soft and feminism, ready to woo the masses.” She glared at him, as he continued, “Get up, I have to leave.”

“You have to leave?” she asked. “I’m not coming with you?”

“Nope. I need to talk to him alone.” he smiled, and opened the door, “Your grace and beauty might distract him.” Kai said, quickly closing the door, barely avoiding the pillow she’d thrown at him.

He headed downstairs to the dining room.

“Morning Sir. Care for a bit of breakfast?” a small women asked

“No thank you Xiriam.” he said to her, pulling out a envelope, “My sister has some interest in the tower. Do you know of someone that could show her around it, and give her some of the history about it. I have to run an errand, and might be gone all day, so this would be a big help.”

She smiled at him, “Oh course. One of our neighbors has studied it greatly. I’ll call for him, if she so desires.”

“Thank you again.” he said, and started to walk away, only to turn back again. “Could you also give her this letter.” he asked

She nodded her head, and took the envelope from him, placing it in the pocket of her dress.

Kai headed out into the small town. It’s residents were still waking, as he navigated the wide streets. While it wasn’t a large place, it was old, and had been built with out purpose. Roads winded, curving back into themselves and were known to end abruptly.

After nearly thirty minuets, he found the right house, and knocked on the door.

It was answered by a young man, with dark brown hair, and honey colored eyes.

Kai smiled tightly, “Hello Viper, I need to call in my favor. May I come in?”

The man glared at him, before nodding, and stepping aside. The tall elf entered, and the man closed the door.

—–

Lina dug through her bag, still in her shift. She pulled out a dark blue dress, and smiled. It wasn’t the best dress she owned, but it was her favorite. She stepped into it, and laced the front up. Since they were most likely staying for the day, she figured it would be ok to where it. A better part of her other clothes were pants, and long tunics. While most women frowned on wearing pants, she preferred them when traveling. Skirts were hard to wear while fighting. Her mother had pointed that out, when she was fourteen, and had wanted to where nothing but skirts.

She smiled at the memory, as she pulled her pair up in a bun, grabbed her staff and bag, before heading downstairs.

“Ah, Miss Kerensky. Would you care for some breakfast?” Xiriam asked her.

“Yes please.” she answered, sitting down.

“C’Timoner, please bring out some bread, fruit, and juice for our guest.” she told one of her daughters. Turning back to the young women, “You brother told me you are interested in our tower, yes?”

“Very much so.”

“Ah, then I would recommend Mr. Oshidoa, two doors down. He knows more then anyone, about our great tower. I can have one of my daughters go and get him, if you’d like.”

“Don’t trouble yourself. I’ll head over, as soon as I’m done eating.” Lina said, smiling down at the plate of food, placed before her.

“Very good. As I said, two doors down, on the left. Enjoy your meal.” Xiriam said, turning to go. “Oh, I forgot. Your brother also asked me to give this to you.” she said, placing the envelope on the table, and walking away.

Lina picked it up, and read the contents.

Little one,

As I’m sure you suspected, if all goes well, we will leave here tomorrow morning. Please enjoy the town until then. I should be back for dinner.

Love,
Kai

She folded the letter, and placed it in her bag. Quickly finishing her meal, she wrapped some of the leftover bread in cloth, and put it away.

“Mrs. Xiriam?” she called.

“Yes miss?”

“Would it be possible to have some cheese to take with me? I hope to be gone all day, and it would be easier if I had some food for lunch.”

“Oh course miss.” She answered, rushing back to the kitchen. She returned a minuet latter with a small hunk of cheese, also wrapped. Lina placed them both in her bag, and left the small Inn.

Lina lifted her hand to knock on the door again, when it was opened by a young man, with brown hair, and green eyes.

“Mr.Oshidoa?” she asked

The young man stared at her, his eyes roaming her body, taking in everything.

“Mr. Oshidoa?” she asked again.

“Excuse me?” he asked her, “Can I help you?”

“I’m looking for Mr. Oshidoa. The owner of the Inn told me he lived here.” She turned towards the tower, “I’d like to learn more about the tower, and she told me he would be willing to show it to me, as well as the history of it.” she finished, turning back to him.

He smiled at her, “Well, you’ve found him.” he said, reaching in to grab a cloak, before closing the door. “I’d be happy to show you around the tower.”

She smiled at him, “Thank you so much Mr. Oshidoa.”

“Please, call me Tamin, miss?”

“Oh! Where are my manners. Lina Kerensky. I’m here with my brother. We plan on leaving tomorrow, and since he’s busy all day with work.” she shrugged, “Thought I could study the tower.”

Tamin took her arm, and smiled, “Then let us get to it.” he said, leading her towards the gate.

—-

“Let me get this straight. Princess Mara wants to find some old stone. To do this, she needs some helpers. She already has two, her guardian, and your sister. She wants you as well. Her guardian, an old friend of yours, thinks this thief in Atem-Ra is the fifth, and I’m a perfect sixth? How does he know about us?” The Viper asked Kai, frowning.

“I suspect he used d’Illianad’s spy network to gather this information. Lina and I plan on talking to him about that. I have every intention of letting me know that I don’t like being spied on. Other then that, yes. That’s pretty much it.”

The Viper shook his head, “And you really believe all this stuff about sacred jewels, and mages?”

Kai shrugged, “I grew up with it. My fathers a High Priest of the Phoenix, and I’ve seen some of the things he can do. It’s not all smoke and mirrors.”

The Viper stood, “Your going to insist on me coming with.” the man nodded, “Then you’ll need to start calling me by my name, Kyp. The Viper is a little to well known in some places, and might cause some problems.” he smiled, “And, since we’re going to be working together for some time, you and your sister are welcome to join me for dinner, and even stay the night. It might make things easier tomorrow.”

“That would be wonderful. I’ll go and pick her, and our things up.”

“I’ll come along with. Haven’t seen Xiriam for several weeks now.”

Kai shook his his head, “How do you do it? You, the best, or second best as you call it, assassin in the world, yet you live in this simple town. Your friends with your neighbors, and most of the town. Don’t they wonder about what you do, that keeps you living so high an mighty? Besides that, how can you be so… so… normal? You do kill people for a living. Invade there lives, sometimes become their friends, or more, just to assassinate them.”

Kyp smiled again, as they left his house, “For starters, my father trained me that you should be two people. The Assassin, and the Man. Or in my case, The Viper and Kyp. They live differant lives. The Viper only comes out when he needs to. As Kyp, his memories don’t exist. Kyp is just an amazing fighter. He dosen’t see what the Viper does. As to living here, that’s the beauty of the Dryads. They keep to themselves for the most part. Why do you think so many scholars live in their small towns? Because they can do so, and nobody cares who they are, or why there here. As long as you treat them well, they’ll leave you alone. No, don’t turn there.” he said, as the Elf started to turn to the right, “It’s much faster this way.”

“I’ve only been here that one other time, so it still feels a bit odd.”

“It took me almost three months to really learn how the locals navigate this place.”

—-

“So then, the God’s of Ahmana’itka placed this tower here, to signify the end of the their time.” Tamin said, as he lead Lina around the inside of the tower.

“Then, they left before the great war of the Gods.” she asked him

“Um… Yes, they… ah… Sensed the war, and left before it happened.”

Lina gingerly touched the walls, “Amazing. I’ve never heard of God’s that left before the war. I was taught that all the God’s died in the great War.”

Tamin walked up behind her, and smiled. “There is so much in this world to learn.” he said

She turned around, surprised at his closeness, “Can we see the other levels?” she asked, walking towards the stairs.

He frowned, and followed after her. “Only a few. The upper levels are closed off.”

“Why?”

“They take to long to get too. It was believed at one time, that there were bedrooms, and the such, at each floor, above the fifth.”

Lina turned to him, smiling, “Could you imagine what it must have been like? A whole city, in this one tower. Inns, stores, on every floor. It must have been amazing.”

He ran a finger down the side of her face, and grinned, “Amazing in deed.”

—-

“Ah, Mr. Kerensky, you are back. And Mr. Kyp, it has been sometime.” was the greeting from Xiriam

“Hello Xiriam, is my sister back yet?” Kai asked

“No, she’s still out with Mr. Oshidoa.”

Kyp turned sharply to her, “Oshidoa’s out of town. He left just last week. His do nothing nephew’s watching his house for him. When did she leave?”

“Just after breakfast. She planned on being out all day.”

Kyp turned on heel, and walked out, the elf close on his heels.

“I take it you don’t trust him?” Kai asked, as they headed towards the gate.

The brunett shook his head, “He’s a pig. From what I’ve been able to find out, he likes women, and has been known to take what he wants from them. Where are you going?” he asked, as Kai started towards the gate.

“Lina wanted to see the tower. Once she gets an idea in her head, she won’t stop till she’s happy. Besides, I get the impression that most of the locals leave it alone, so it’s perfect for what your suggesting.

—-

Lina looked out the window, and gasped, “Oh my goodness, I hadn’t realized how late it was. I have to get back to the Inn, or Kai will worry about me.” she said, walking to the doorway, that led to the stairs.

Tamin grabbed her arm, her staff falling to the floor, and pulled her close to him, “But we were just starting to get to know each other.”

She glared at him, “Let me go Tamin.”

His hold on her tightened, “But I haven’t gotten what I wanted from you yet.” he said, trying to kiss her.

The girl swiftly brought her knee up, slaming into his groin. His grip on her loosened. “Oh, a feisty one. Haven’t had one try and fight back in some time.”

He leaned in again, his lips brushing hers. Lina leaned back her body pressed close. She lifted her leg, and threw him over her. Tamin went crashing to the ground. She picked op her staff, and pointed it at him.

“Don’t come any closer.” she told him.

“Oh come now sweet pea, you don’t think that lil staff is goin hurt me, do ya?” He said, slowly advancing towards her.

She narrowed her eyes, “I will use this.” Lina said.

—-

Kai raced in the building, and called out for his sister. He turned to Kyp, “Are there upper levels?” He nodded, and the two men ran up the stairs. They searched the next two levels, with no luck.

As they neared the forth level, Kyp heard voices.

“They’re in here.” he said, “And she sounds pissed.”

The elf smiled, as they tried to open the door, “She’s a fighter. Could probably take him down, no problem.”

“Then why are you so worried.” the man asked, pulling out a lock picking kit, and getting to work on the locked door.

“Two reasons. One, I don’t know what he’s like. Might be, he could best her. Two, he might get lucky, and knock her out. I’d be willing to bet she’s wearing a dress, thinking there’s nothing to worry about.”

Kyp looked up from his task, “She doesn’t normally wear dresses?”

“Mother was a merc. Couple years ago, Li wanted to where nothing but skirts and dresses. Mom challenged her to a fight, and more then kicked her ass. Since then, she rarely wears them. Mom had some pants made for her, and some long tunics.”

The brunett opened the door. In front of his stood a man, holding a women close to him. He kissed her, and she threw him over her shoulder. Kai pushed in behind him, and they saw her pick up her staff. The tall elf placed a hand on the assassians arm, holding him back.

“Let her take care of this.” he said

Kyp looked again at the women, and his breath caught. She was breathing heavy, her breast heaving, seeming to strain at the neckline of her bodice. Some of her hair had escaped her bun, wisps of it framing her face. The dress was a newer style, and hung low on her hips.

“Don’t come any closer.” she told him.

“Oh come now sweet pea, you don’t think that lil staff is goin hurt me, do ya?” He said, slowly advancing towards her.

She shifted the staff, so it was pointing at him. “I will use this.” she said.

Kyp saw her grip on the staff relax, as the man stepped forward. Her eyes closed, and she started to mumble to her self.

The tip of the staff glowed red, and all three men stopped in there tracks. Behind her, the sun was setting, causing shadows to dance on the walls. Tamin sneered and, not seeing the other two men, continued forward. Kyp stared at her, as light seemed to surround her. The other man’s eyes suddenly grew wide as, what seemed to be a bird, flew from the end of her staff, knocking him over. He flew back several feet, and feel uncouncios to the floor.

She opened her eyes, and frowned, “Of all the days to where a dress, I pick this one.” She said, looking at the two men. “How did you know I was in trouble?”

Kai grinned, “We went back to the inn, and heard you were out. Kyp remembered that the man Xiriam had told you to visit, was out of town. He doesn’t really like this guy, so we came to save you.”

She raised an eyebrow at him, “Kai, you haven’t saved me in close to five years.”

He walked over to her, picked her up, and held her close to him, “Don’t care.” Is all he says, and he hugs her.

Kyp walks over to Tamin, “Don’t mean to interrupt, but what are we gonna do with him?”

“Leave him.” Lina says, “He won’t wake up for several hours, and he won’t be able to walk until tomorrow.” She pulled away from Kai, “Would you please put me down?” He smiled, and set her down, “We can let someone know he’s here, or just forget him. I don’t really care.”

Kyp looked at her, surprised, “That’s pretty cold for a priestess.”

“I read his thoughts before knocking him out. He planned on beating me, raping me, and leaving me somewhere.” she looked at Kyp and smiled, “I’m Lina. Thanks for helping my brother find me.”

He smiled at her, “Kyp. Your not an elf?”

“Nope, human.” she started to the door with him, “Kai found me, and I was raised by our parents. Do you have a last name?”

Kyp laughed, as they headed down the stairs. “Not that I know of. My father lived a very, interesting life. He found, and raised me. Why are you so interested in the tower?”

Kai followed behind them, as they traded questions back and forth.

“Listen, why don’t I go back to the Inn, pay Xiriam, and pick up our things. You two go on ahead to Kyps house.”

“We’re staying at Kyp’s house?” Lina asked, her eyes wide

“If you don’t mind.” he asked he, hoping she’d say yes, not sure why.

She smiled at him, unknowingly heating his body, “I’d love to.”

He smiled back at her, and led her towards his house, while Kai headed back to the inn.

{October 11, 2008}   ~untitled~ Chapter 1

‘“And the Five Shall Gather Around The Star
The Evil Will Grow
And that which has been hidden
Shall once again, Rise”

‘–Translation from the stone of the Antiquity
Prophecy for the Age of Rain

‘Most people will tell you this story is about the Princess Mara.  They’ll also say that she was the one who found the sacred jewel.  And that she alone was able to once again call the five mages, and return the demon Holta to hell.

Most people are wrong.

If the princess were still around, she’d tell you the same thing I will.  All she did was ask for their help.  They handled the rest.  Who are they?  Why, they are the five mages.  It was just one hundred years ago, that they first met.

It was the fifth year of the Dragon.  Kai Kerensky was returning home at the request of his family. His father had recently elevated his daughter, Lina, from only being novice, to a full priestess.

Kai Kerensky rode into the small town, bemused by the lack of changes he saw.  He wondered if the place would ever change, or stay like this for ever.   After one-hundred and forty yeas he was leaning towards no.  The family house finally came in to view, and he looked over the small two story structure.  Home.  No matter how many times he grew restless and returned to his band of Mercnaries, this would always be home.  The elf dismounted and went about unpacking his horse, and washing it down.

“Welcome home Kai.”

Turing around towards the voice, Kai saw a woman approaching him.  She was short, with long black hair that had streaks of red in it.  Her clear blue eyes sparkled in the darkness.  Smiling at his niece, he picked her up.

“I thought mom’s letter said you’d grown taller?”

“I am taller.  I grew three inches since you were last here.”

Setting her down, he laughed, “Three inches?  When I was your age, I was already six feet tall.  What are you now, five-two? Five-three?”

She stamped her foot in the snow, “I’m five feet, six inches tall.  Which is pretty good for a human.”

Kai laughed at him, loving how much fire there was burning in her.  “Aye, but your always be a little on the short side.  Did mom and da send you out, or did you see me and volentere?”

“I saw you, and didn’t tell them why I left.  Not often I get to spend time with my uncle, alone.  I thought the two of us could talk…”  Lina said, biting the inside of her cheek.  “It’s been two years since you were last home, and I’ve missed you Kai.”

The elf smiled, and leaned down to hug her again.  “I’ve missed you too little one.  Your no longer a child, but a young women.  “Come I’m not expected for another hour, and it’s not so cold out.  Let’s sit and talk.  I scence you’ve got something on your mind.”

He led her over to a small alcove in the stable, where they sat to talk.  “Tell me, what is wrong.  Are the others making fun of you?” He asked.

She looked up at him skeptically, “Right.  They’re going to openly say something negitive about the adopted daughter of the high priest of the Phoenix and the former leader of the Panthers, the best mercenary crew ever?  The girl who was found by the great merc Kai?”  Shaking her head, she added “You know they’d never do anything to me.  Most would be too afraid of either mom or dad.  Never mind if it ever got back to you.”

Kai frowned, “I know it’s been hard on you, little one.  Most didn’t want us to keep you.  Too many fear our kin and neighbors.  We should live with the other races, not apart from them.  The phoenix has never said one race was above another.”

Looking at the ground, Lina nodded.  “Fathers also been saying that the time of joining is coming.  The time when all the races must join together as one, to fight against the growing evil.”

“It was your appearance that first gave him that insight.  When I walked in holding you, he saw two visions.  One of immense evil, and one of a long lasting peace.”  he huged her. “He told me then, that you were important, and that the two of us would help to change the world.”

Silently she nodded, and the two got up, walking to the house.  As they entered Kai smiled as the scent of his mother’s cooking wafed toawrds him.  She was really going all out for Lina.  Not that Lina didn’t deserve it.   She was their pride and joy.

His parents had tried for years to have more children, but the Phoenix had decided that one was all they’d have.  At least, one natural child.  He looked at his niece, so small and almost delicate looking.  Eighteen years ago, he’d been returning home for a short visit when he’d come across the remains of a burned-out wagon.  Normally, he’d have passed by and left it alone, but something had held him back.  Inside, he’d found five bodies.  All human.  The smell of burned flesh had almost been more than he could bear.  He’d been about to leave when his ears had picked up the sound of a small cry.  He had dug through the ashes, and there he’d found her. She couldn’t have been more then a few months old.  In his one hundred and twenty-three years, he’d never seen anything so tiny.  So fragile, and helpless.  Cradling her to him, he’d rushed home, wondering what he was going to do with this small, human child.

His parents had loved Lina, the instant they’d seen her.  With out a moment’s hesitation, they’d decided to raise her as their own.  Due to their vast age difference, Kai had become known to her as uncle, instead of her brother.  She became the first human to be raised in this town.

She was eighteen now, and as much an elf as a human.  It hadn’t been easy.   He knew the only reason the elders had allowed her to remain, was because of his parents.  His father, Berit, was the most respected priest of the Phoenix in five countries.  Humans, Elves, Kenders, Centaurs, even the Dryads respected him.  The Phoenix had blessed him with second sight, magic, and much more.

And then there was his mother.  Garana Kerensky.  She’d gathered the best mercenaries in the known lands, and some from the unknown, and made them better.  She’d fought wars no one had thought she could win.  She’d caught bandits, and assassins.  Murderers and simple thieves.  Her people loved her, and that love made her stronger.  The only job she’d ever failed at was to catch the elusive Assassin.  He’d somehow gotten past her.  But then, when the best go up against each other, one has to come out second best.

The wind howled, drawing Kai’s eyes fromt he pot he was stirring, and towards the brewing storm.  It looked to be primaily wind, and his sharp eyes noticed the snow was gone.  He commented to his mother on the strangeness of the storm.  After several hudred years of being married to Berit, she answered how he would have.

“The Phoenix does, as the Phoenix does.  If we were to ask, we would not understand.  If we understood, we would not see need to ask.  Now, stop stirring before you ruin the soup.”

——————————-

“Bless us oh Phoenix, and bless those without tonight.  Keep us safe, and may the storm do your bidding.  Amen”

“Amen.”  Kai answered, before looking at his niece, “So Lina, what will your new duties be?”  He asked.

Her eyes widened, and strayed to her father’s.  He nodded, and smiled encouragingly, “I’m actually thinking of becoming  a bodyguard.”

“A bodyguard?”  He asked, “But you just became a priestess?”!”

“Yes, and I’ll still be one.  But I also want to use the skills mother gave me.   Years ago, many priests and priestess of the Phoenix would take on bodyguard positions.  My thesis was about it.  It was believed that the Phoenix was a goddess of love, beauty, and wisdom, but also of wars, and fighting.  She was considered fair and just.  For one to hire a bodyguard of hers, she had to first decide if the reason was pure.”

“The reason was pure?  You’ll need to explain that one.”

She grinned, “As an example, Princess Mara is looking for a bodyguard to help her, while she looks for the mages of old.  Her guardian, Dri Hul, recommended me.”

“Dri’s her guardian?”

She nodded, “Dri was a good friend of the Old King, and was given guardianship over her, when the King died.  Since they’re still fighting over who should rule, Mara or her aunt Alina, he’s been taking care of her.”

“So where do you come in?”  Kai asked, sensing there was more to this than just wanting to put their mothers fighting skills to use.

“A month ago, the witch of Skevee visited her, with a message.  She needed to put together a team, and search for the five mages.  She had three months to put the team together.  She was spicific that there were to be six on the quest.  She was the first.  From what I understand, she also said that the five would fall in to place, with no outside help, once Mara chose her the next member.  Dri was the first, then four more.  I happen to slightly resemble the princess, and with the skills of both father and mother was a good match.  Member number three.”

He raised his eyebrow, “Am I to be one as well?”

“Only if you want.  A big part of this is that we must all go willingly.  If she bribes the person, and they then decide to join us, then…” she let it trail off with a grin.

“Is she planning on bribing me?” He asked her.

Lina grinned at that, shaking her head.  “I told her it was pointless to try.  You’re above reproach.  She did ask me to convince you to help.  I told her I would tell you about it, and let you decide.  No one makes up your mind for you.”

“And what did she say to that?”

Lina’s grin grew, as they both knew the answer, “Now she wants you more then ever.”

Kai laughed, “Let me see if I’ve got this straight.  You’ve decided to take on an ancient job, to work for the Princess of d’Illianad, and go on the journey of a lifetime?”

She nodded as he continued, “Then you have the nerve to ask if I want to go, saying you won’t force me, but then pointing out all my ‘outstanding’ qualities to said princess, and yet still not promise I’ll go?”

She nodded again, and he rolled his eyes at her, “Of course I’m going with you, if no other reason then to watch out for you, my little sister. ((find elven for little sister))”

Lina looked at him, shock on face.  They’d always danced around those two little words, neither wanting to take a leap they weren’t sure the other wanted.  “You… You’ve never all me that.”

He shrugged, smile on his face, “I’ve only thought of you as one for the last few months.  You’ve grown up so much, it’s hard to think of you as only a child.  You are my sister, in all but blood.”

Berit smiled at his son, “Then you’ve finally admitted it.  ‘Bout bloody time.” he said, taking another bite of his dinner, “Do you wanna know anything else about this journey, or are you just gonna leave with her tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow?  We have to leave tomorrow?”

Garana nodded, “I can take care of your men, don’t worry.  Kayla and I have talked about it, and between the two of us, the Ghosts will be fine.”

He mock glared at them, “I sense a setup.”

His father shrugged, “We, that is your mother and I, knew you would want to go along.  Not because it’s your destiny, but to watch over your sister.”

“I can see that going up against the three of you is pretty futile, so I won’t unpack.  When do we leave tomorrow, and where are we going?”

“We’ll leave around noon.  I know, it’s better to leave early, but since were heading to Atem-Ra, we should only need a few hours.”  Lina winked at him,  “This way, you can catch up with old friends, or something, before we leave.”

“I thought Princess Mara was in Aphrellla.  Why are we going to Atem-Ra first?”

“We have to pick up a thief there.  Someone tried to steal the Moon Maiden’s Swords.  Nearly got them too.  Dri thinks she might be helpful.  He also asked that if you were going, to ask if you would be willing to call on a favor in Hour-Sisi.”

Kai raised his eyebrow, “Did he now?  Dri must really believe this is important, for me to visit Isisi.”  He glared at his plate, “We’ll leave at seven.  The thief isn’t going anywhere, but our friend in Isisi might.”  Smiling at his bewildered sister, he repeated his first sentence. “At seven, we head out to Hour-Sisi.”
